Cellar Darling – Drown (Music Video)

Swiss trio Cellar Darling unveils the fourth single off their upcoming album “The Spell”. Watch the animated video for “Drown” below.

Cellar Darling formed in summer 2016 when Anna Murphy (vocals, hurdy-gurdy), Merlin Sutter (drums) and Ivo Henzi (guitars & bass) left Switzerland’s most successful metal act to date, the folk metallers Eluveitie. The trio released their debut album “This Is The Sound” in June 2017, introducing a new wave of folk rock. In January 2019, Cellar Darling announced details of their sophomore album “The Spell”, due out March 22 via Nuclear Blast.

Today, the trio presents the fourth single titled “Drown” along with a dark animated music video, once again created by Costin Chioreanu. The band comments: “Drown took almost a year to complete. We had so many different versions and we just couldn’t make it work… we really felt like we were drowning at some point.”

“The Spell” is a concept album telling the story of a girl who falls in love with Death. Anna Murphy talked about the creative process in an interview for  Metal & High Heels: “The tracklist was basically there before we wrote the music. So we wrote the music according to the story, which is something we’ve never done before.”

“It’s very theatrical, it’s kind of like a dark fairy tale,” she described the story and continued explaining the narrative in more depth: “This girl, she is a nameless girl that is birth into a world that is in pain. And so with this pain, she just spends the days that seem just very meaningless, kind of drifting through life and not knowing what you’re searching for. And she meets Death, who in our story is portrayed as a character, and falls in love with him.” But don’t let yourself be fooled; “The Spell” is far from the cliché romantic stories we all know. “Death casts a spell on her – of eternal life – which makes her not able to join him,” revealed Anna.

The album will be available as 2 CD-digibook (featuring 13 songs + an audiobook of Anna Murphy telling the story behind the concept), black vinyl and digitally on March 22. All album details can be found here.
