Update on new music: Dark Sarah, Delain, Eleine, Evanescence, Ex Libris

2019 seems to be a good year for new music from metal goddesses. Many, many bands are releasing or writing new tunes this year. Here’s a quick update on what’s been going on behind the scenes in the recording studios and during songwriting sessions. Part one features Dark Sarah, Delain, Eleine, Ex Libris and Evanescence.

Dark Sarah

After leaving Amberian Dawn in 2012, Heidi Parviainen set to sail on a fantasy journey and released a conceptual cinematic metal Chronicles trilogy consisting of Behind The Black Veil, The Puzzle and The Golden Moth with Dark Sarah. With the storyline of a character named Sarah and her alter ego Dark Sarah being closed, it’s time for a new vision to come to life. No further details are known at the moment, but the vocal recordings for DS #4 have started on June 19. That’s a good sign, right?

Delain

Even though Delain recently parted ways with guitarist Merel Bechtold, it’s not stopping them from creating their upcoming album. Vocalist Charlotte Wessels chatted about the progress with Metal Wani at Download Festival. “We are recording. This whole festival season for us is recording, performing, recording, performing…” She revealed that they “have three-quarters of it done”, hoping that “by the time we hit the UK in February, there will be a new album”. “The music on the new album is going to be really big and bombastic. I think it’s going to be more symphonic as a whole and more uptempo as a whole,” Charlotte spoke to Ticketmaster UK. The band teamed up with a professional orchestral arranger and recorded a choir for their upcoming album.

Eleine

Symphonic metallers Eleine may have released their second album “Until The End” only last year, but they are already armed with new tracks. We caught up with vocalist Madeleine Liljestam and guitarist Rikard Ekberg right before they entered a studio in June (full interview). When asked about new music, Rikard stated: “As an artist and musician, you’re always writing music. It’s hard to stop it. But we’re actually planning to not release a full album this year because that would be crazy.” However, there’s a new Eleine release coming up later this year. “We’re going to release an EP this year,” Rikard revealed for Metal Goddesses. Eleine might play some of the new tunes on a special event called “An Evening with Eleine” in Stockholm on October 5. Be there!

Evanescence

Evanescence team is ready to jump straight into the writing of a new record, a follow up of their 2011’s self-titled album. The vocalist Amy Lee has shared some words on the new material in recent interviews. “This is sort of like a creation year for us,” she revealed for Sirius XM. The plan is to “get together and start the writing process for a new album” in between the scheduled shows. Talking to Consequence of Sound, Lee said: “I don’t know what it’s going to sound like, but definitely coming off of doing that very epic and beautiful orchestral thing, we’re ready to at least begin the process from a very raw, more aggressive place.” She added: “I’m excited to start out from our raw, live-minded place where we are right now. I think feeding off the energy of these shows right now and going right into a short writing session to start off will be really cool.”  So when can we expect new Evanescence music? “Hopefully, next year,” says Amy in an interview for Sirius XM.

Ex Libris

In summer 2018, Dutch progressive metal outfit Ex Libris fronted by Dianne van Giersbergen announced that their third full-length album “Ann” will be divided into three releases; each release representing a different historical figure named Ann. With “Chapter 1: Anne Boleyn” and “Chapter 2: Anastasia Romanova” already released, only the final piece is now left. The third chapter of “Ann” trilogy is dedicated to Anne Frank, a Jewish victim of the Holocaust known for a diary documenting her life in hiding during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands. The band’s been working with the renowned producer Joost van den Broek in Sandlane Studio again. Expected release of “Chapter 3: Anne Frank” is autumn 2019.

Stay tuned for part two featuring Infected Rain, Jinjer, Lacuna Coil and more.
