Let’s recap the road to Within Temptation’s huge comeback to stages step by step with the first-hand testimony from a fan who has already attended one of the grandiose Resist shows. Read more to find what you’ve been missing out so far.
It all started at the end of November 2017, when the band announced a European tour for late 2018 – the first shows starting to sell out in December, almost one year before the actual tour. The expectations and excitement of fans were growing bigger each day, even more since we all knew what the tour announcement means. Exactly, a new album! Unfortunately, the so-favourite “soon” wasn’t soon enough, and it took the band months to break the silence again. With a new record deal with Vertigo Records Germany signed in July, we were one step closer. But don’t let be fooled, the great news didn’t come until mid-September. We got to learn the name and release date of so eagerly anticipated no. 7 along with the first single titled “The Reckoning“. “Resist” news started to spread like fire, the music video was released and Beyond The Black and Ego Kill Talent were announced as support bands for selected shows that were about to start soon. The first show in Krasnoyarsk surprised everyone. New outfits, new stage production, new setlist with new songs. Everything was bigger and more bombastic than ever before.
We had a chat with Joakim, one of the fans who attended the Resist show in Oslo on October 23 and gladly agreed to share his experience.
For this tour, Within Temptation are offering VIP tickets for the first time. “I did not hesitate a second to buy the VIP upgrades when they came out. The best decision I have ever made. To get to meet them before the show was the best moment of my life by far,” says Joakim.
Besides meeting the band before the show, a soundcheck and backstage tour is a part of VIP upgrade. You get to peek behind the scenes, see the band’s green room, their costumes and more. For soundcheck, the band played new songs “Raise Your Banner” and “Supernova” in Oslo. “When they were finished with the soundcheck, they came down from the stage and greeted us. We got to talk to them, got some signatures. I gave some gifts to Sharon and the boys, we took some group pictures with the band and talked a bit more. After that, they went to get ready for the show, and we went to the merch booth.”
It was time to wait for the opening act – the rising German symphonic metal stars Beyond The Black fronted by Jennifer Haben. “They were probably some of the best opening acts I have ever seen,” states Joakim. Beyond The Black who recently released a new album “Heart Of The Hurricane” played seven songs, warming up the audience for the main act.
Within Temptation’s playlist for The Resist Tour is interesting, indeed. The band is playing not one nor two but five new tracks, opening with an epic piece titled “Raise Your Banner”. “I think the setlist was awesome. Of course, there were some songs I missed like Ice Queen, Angels, Our Solemn Hour… But they had to make room for some new songs and I support that decision because the new songs are awesome. I have had Raise Your Banner stuck in my head ever since the concert, Mercy Mirror was so good it made me cry during the song. I think it was exciting that they played some unreleased songs and it just got me more hyped for the full album to come out.”
“Everything from Mike’s bass drum all the way to Sharon’s high notes was perfect,” praises Joakim the band’s performance. “It seemed like everyone enjoyed themselves and they all had such a good charisma on stage.” And not only the band had a blast. “Everyone I spoke to after the concert was very happy with the show. I was sort of hypnotised during the show.”
So what were the highlights of the show? Knowing Within Temptation and their superb live shows, it’s extremely hard to pick only a few moments that would stand out from others. Joakim narrowed it down to a few for us: “One of the highlights was clearly when they played Forgiven, The Promise, Mercy Mirror and Stairway to the Skies. It was also some big moments during the show when I got a high-five from Sharon and Ruud, a fist bump from Stefan and when Ruud handed me his guitar pick and Mike his drumstick. Not to mention all the eye contact and smiles from Sharon during the show, I melted every time.”

To sum it up, Within Temptation is “the nicest and most fantastic band of all time, can’t wait until the next time.” And we truly believe Joakim every single word. There is only one Within Temptation – the unique, unrivalled jewel of symphonic metal.
Now, it’s up to you to resist the temptation. The tour continues until late December but act quick and grab your tickets asap, many shows are selling out.
